The first meeting of the year for The Board of Supervisors got off to a rough start when things got a little heated between the board members.
The six supervisors are in a deadlock over who should be the next Chair of the Board. Typically, the most senior supervisor takes the position, which means it would go to Duane Snow.
However, Anne Malleck, Dennis Rooker and Chris Dumler wanted something in return for their votes.
"We were perfectly willing to support Mr. Snow for the Chairmanship," said Dumler. " All we asked in exchange was for a seat at the table. And we were denied that."
What the Democratic board members want is a position on the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), which is the committee that paved the way for the Western Bypass.
Snow and Rodney Thomas are both on the MPO, and neither is willing to turn over their position in exchange for the Chairmanship of the Board of Supervisors.
Board member Ken Boyd calls the bartering of positions a travesty, saying, "I think it's unconscionable. It's not something we should be doing and we've never done before. It's a policy that some members of our board have practiced over the past two years and I just don't think it should be that way. We ought to not politicize committee appointments."
