Charges Filed in Rape Arrest Sunday Afternoon

April 15, 2013

Albemarle County Police charged 32-year-old Henry Lee Jasper with forcible rape and abduction.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon right across the street from the Albemarle County Police Headquarters, in the University Place apartments.

"This case is a little different than most rapes that we see because ordinarily the victim and the suspect do know each other so this was a stranger rape and it is alarming for us," said Carter Johnson, Public Information Officer for Albemarle County Police.

It's a case they don't see often here but police say the victim was able to escape her attacker and call 911.

"There were some people in the area who were able to help and call police and we were alerted relatively quickly and that helped in our investigation and ultimately with the arrest," Johnson said.

Brittany Everett, a 4th-year student at UVa went back to her apartment yesterday to police cars right outside. And when she heard what happened in the building just next door, she was shocked.

"Kinda scared me. Even just now answering the door for you, okay I don't know this person should I open the door how far should I open the door," said Everett, a University Place resident.

She says the apartments house mostly undergraduates at UVa.

"This isn't really the first kind of incident that has happened around here so me and my roommates, all being females, all be cautious of when we go out. But being a student, if we're coming back at 3 a.m. from the library, you know, you want to run from your car and make sure no one's around."

The investigation is ongoing and as police get more information about what happened on Sunday afternoon, they're also making sure the victim has all the support she needs.

"We do have a program in place, the victim witness program and they're really here to support the victim from the initial incident all the way through with court proceedings until the very end," Johnson said.

Jasper is listed in the convicted sex offenders registry for a 1999 conviction of aggravated sexual battery in Louisa County.
