Charlottesville Approves New Food Truck Rules

May 7, 2013

The Charlottesville City Council is making changes to the city code to accommodate mobile vendors.

Before a vote Monday night, the chapter that deals with selling food from four wheels only included ice cream trucks.

At least six mobile food trucks cook up meals on four wheels for people in Charlottesville.

Daniel Heilberg owns the Lunchbox Express and says, "It's really easy to run it and operate it because they cost is low, but at some point you don't want to become over-saturated."

The popularity of these trucks has caused City Council to take a closer look at them, and how to include these mobile businesses in the city code.

Charlottesville City Council voting to pass two ordinances, establishing how food trucks operate and where they can park.

Food truck owners say, so far, the process has been an easy ride.

"Everything has gone smoothly and luckily, vendors ourselves, amongst ourselves, do a pretty good job of making sure we're keeping pretty high standards and not causing any problems with anybody."

He is already looking for the next step Council can make to keep the wheels turning on the mobile eateries.

"If they really wanted to help out, we could establish something like a court, a food court or set up hours at a park or something and then electricity would keep us from having generators."

The City of Charlottesville has been tweaking this ordinance since it first proposed it to vendors back in October.

After Monday night's vote, the changes went into effect immediately.
