The City of Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department held its annual Safe Halloween event at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

It went from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and featured a costume contest, acrobatics, juggling, music, a pumpkin carving contest and even a pie eating contest. The Newsplex's own Chris Stover won that event.

The event began several years ago to give kids and their families a safe environment to have fun and celebrate Halloween.

Bernie Garrison with City Parks and Recreation helped to organize the event and says that its not just fun for the kids, the adults and even the volunteers have a blast too.

"I'm having fun," he said. "I've been here early setting up, but it's always nice to have a nice day for an event like this and to see lots of smiling faces."

The Charlottesville Derby Dames volunteered at the event along with a large number of Parks and Rec employees.

After some events at the Pavilion, the kids went Trick-or-Treating along the Downtown Mall.
