Charlottesville Opens Cooling Centers to Those Needing to Escape the Heat

July 15, 2013

It's going to be hot out this week, and that means Charlottesville Cooling Centers are now open.

Anyone needing a place to cool down can visit the Key Recreation Center or the Tonsler Park Recreation Center in the city to escape the heat.

Both centers have an air conditioned place for you to sit, drink some water and cool off.

Officials say they expect many people to take advantage of the opportunity.

"We make it a point, when it gets upper 80's to open the doors to folks that don't have a way to cool," says Van Johnson with Charlottesville Parks and Recreation. "We make it a point that at least these two sites will open up. And they do have good, cool, working air conditioners."

The Key Recreation Center will be open all week from 11 AM to 7 PM, while the Tonsler Recreation Center will be open from 2 PM to 9 PM.
