Dozens gathered at the Carver Recreation Center at the Jefferson School for a celebration of Black History Month.
A list of speakers and singers honoring some of the men and women who contributed to the civil rights movement.
Many also took away a new understanding of those who helped make history during slavery.
"We all should know about our ancestors where we come from, where everything started. We should know that it wasn't as easy as it is now as it was yesterday," said Van Johnson from Charlottesville Park and Recreation.
The event also featured photo exhibits of influential African-Americans.
