Charlottesville Residents Protest Eviction of Mother of Six

April 24, 2013

Community and family members came out to protest the decision made by the Housing Authority to evict one of the residents living on Hardy Dr.

Relatives of the residents claim that they were not given a long enough notice about the eviction, and members of the community were outraged by the decision.

"This is an injustice," says city council candidate Wes Bellamy. "I really don't know how we get to a point where we put dollar amounts over actual people."

"This family has no where to go and we've asked can we pay the amount, they won't let us do so," says Bellamy. "So now, who knows where these people are going to go, it's just a tough situation."

The family did go to court in early March to discuss the potential eviction, but the judge ruled that they did owe money and they should be evicted. Since there was no appeal filed in that 10 day period after the court date, the eviction was final.

A member of the Housing Authority also said that once the eviction is finalized, there is nothing they can do about it.

The family is asking that if you know anyone that can help them, to contact Deirdre Gilmore from the Public Housing Association of
Residents at (434) 422-2574.
