While several school districts like Albemarle County closed school under the threat of wintry weather, students in Charlottesville City went to school, only to be dismissed early because of the threat of snowy conditions.

School buses lined Dairy Drive outside of Upper Walker Elementary School. Students and parents were being told that classes would be ending early due possible snow.

"We are in the process and we have informed the public that we are closing school early beginning at 11:30am for our three year olds and ending at 1pm for our high-schoolers," said Assistant Superintendent for Administration Services, Jim

Cold rain fell most of the morning and throughout the afternoon. School officials said they wanted to be prepared if the rain turned to snow.

"The speed of that storm, the frequency and the snow accumulation is going to come in fast about an inch an hour. We want kids and staff off the road by 2:00pm ," said Henderson.

Some students say they welcome the snow.

"I'm excited because I got these new snow boots. I really want to go sledding and I hope to get to see my friends over the break," said Walker student Esther Larson Torres.

School officials said about 4000 students were released early.
