Charlottesville school administrators are trying to fill an almost 1.5 million dollar budget deficit. Ed Gillespie, the districts financial director, says for the last five years they have been forced to make cuts to make ends meet. If they cut anymore, they'll cut into students education.
"What we're really saying is that the school division is in a situation where there is not a lot of capacity to absorb cuts without significantly impacting some program and services," he said Friday. "We are at a point where it becomes a little unstable and a little unpredictable on terms of service delivery.
City councilor Kathy Galvin is in support of allocating money to help fill the gap but not every councilor agrees. "There was another level skepticism on the part of the remainder of the councilors and very justifiably so that they need to know more detail," said Galvin.
Councilors want to know what additional cuts can be made in a proposed "phase one cut" by school officials. That cut hasn't been fully detailed by school leaders. However it likely could put jobs and school programs at risk of being cut.
"That is the concern of several of us, that next round of phase one cuts as they call them, that it will start effecting our success," said Galvin.
School leaders will meet Saturday to discus the phase one cut.
