Ralph Waite, the star of the CBS show The Waltons, passed away Thursday at the age of 85.

One of his co-stars on the series, Kami Cotler, has ties to Nelson County and reflected on the actor's life.

"It's like any death of someone in the family," she said Saturday. "Cast members are calling each other and emailing and checking in with each other. For many of us, Ralph was our 'last dad.'"

The Waltons was loosely based on the Schuyler area of Nelson County. Cotler spent time living there as a teacher.

Cotler played Elizabeth Walton, a daughter of Waite's character, in the series.

"It's a loss for all of us, and it's a loss that exists in multiple worlds," she said. "Both for the fans in terms of the character he created and for us in terms of a colleague and the person he was, the person who cared about us."
