Community Celebrates Anniversary of Ghana's Independence

March 9, 2013

Dozens of people celebrated the anniversary of Ghana's independence at Tonsler Park Recreation Center Saturday night.

The Ghana Association of Charlottesville recognized the 56th year of Ghana's freedom with a party.

Ghana gained its independence in 1957, and members of the association say maintaining that status for more than half a century is a major milestone.

"For Ghana to be a country for 56 years, surrounded with traditional walls and stuff like that in Africa, to us, it's awesome, and it needs to be celebrated," said Fatima Boamah of the Ghana Association of Charlottesville.

Ghanaians, Africans, city leaders and others from the community celebrated with traditional music, dancing and Ghanaian food.

Boamah says the association strives to not only improve life for Ghanaians but also have a positive impact on central Virginia.

"We are showing the community what Ghana is about and what we can bring and contribute to Charlottesville and the surrounding areas," said Boamah.
