On Thursday, a firm looking into potentially creating a market district presented their plans to Charlottesville City Council.
One option is improving the market in its current spot, creating more shade and a plaza.
Another concept would shift the market one block to the south, to Garrett Street and 1st Street.
"It's looking at the future and what it might need as it expands, and it has grown over the years," said Ted Spitzer with Market Ventures, Inc. "And also, because the market is located on a very valuable parcel of property, the city is interested in seeing the potential for redeveloping that property from a parking lot into some kind of building."
Council will have a public hearing, and move to the next step of the project, likely in September.
