Computers4Kids Recieves $10,000 CACF Grant

April 22, 2013

Computers4Kids has received a $10,000 grant to help further its mission.

The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation's Youth Service Award Committee presented a check to the non-profit at a ceremony at CitySpace in Charlottesville on Monday.

"We were super excited," said Kala Somerville, executive director of C4K. "This is a very competitive process and we are thrilled to be the lucky recipient."

Somerville says the money will go toward new computer equipment.

"Computers4Kids prides ourself on offering quality programming," said Somerville. "However we're discovering now, that without updated equipment, it's more challenging to provide that service."

C4K gives children technology training and long-term mentoring. The organization assists more than 200 students each year.

"We're thankful for organizations like the CACF, especially with this youth service program, because it introduces young people to the importance of philanthropy," said Somerville.

CACF has been handing out a grant each year since 1994 for area non-profit organizations. The program gives high school seniors a chance to learn about giving back and community service. Ten students from from Charlottesville and Albemarle County schools worked together for several months to determine which non-profit should receive the cash.

Delegate David Toscano was among the crowd recognizing the YSA student committee for their work.

"Lessons you've learned through this process are going to really serve you well, not only in terms of leadership and setting priorities, but working in a group for the betterment of the community," Toscano told the students.
