Conservation Society Offering New Programs to Help Rivanna Watershed

June 13, 2014

The Rivanna Conservation Society (RCS) is showcasing two new programs designed to get the public to help in the care and protection of the Rivanna River Watershed.

The primary goal of the programs is to expand the organization's reach and support throughout the community by improving the river's health.

The two new programs are:

-Rivanna River Stewards- These on-the-water RCS employees will be the eyes and ears of the organization throughout the Rivanna River watershed. The Steward will advocate for conservation, clean water, environmental/fish restoration, and species enhancement. They will patrol the river on a regular basis by boat and will also manage and coordinate the data from the River Guardians Corps program.

-Rivanna River Guardians Corps - Comprised of a group of dedicated RCS volunteers who have agreed to adopt a certain section of the Rivanna as their own. Whether walking a neighborhood stream or paddling the Rivanna, the River Guardians will document suspected pollution sources and their effects, while also reporting natural patterns in river hydrology and aquatic/wildlife sightings. The Guardians are trained in proper water quality sampling protocols and provided with equipment to conduct their sampling.

"We use the Rivanna River as our drinking water and a lot of people recreate in the water as well. It’s just important for us to keep an eye on what’s going on in the water," said Anne Dunckel, monitoring program manager of Stream Watch.
