Costco Unveils Preliminary Plans to Set Up at Stonefield

August 5, 2013

The second-largest retailer in America wants to set up shop in Albemarle County, and it could be the newest addition to the shops at Stonefield.

Representatives from Costco and Stonefield met Monday afternoon with the county's Architectural Review Board.

The store would be part of the second phase of construction at the Albemarle County shopping center, which already includes a Regal Cinema and Trader Joe's. The store would be built on District Avenue, north of the Northrop Grumman headquarters.

Before the ARB Monday afternoon were an initial site plan, a rezoning request and a variation request. The preliminary plan for Costco includes a fueling station.

Costco is a membership-only warehouse store based in Washington. It has nearly 450 locations across the United States, with another nearly 200 stores worldwide. Company records show the store has more than 68 million members in the United States.

The ARB must approve a final site plan and architecture before construction can begin. The Stonefield developer said he hopes to begin construction by early 2014.
