People started work to solve problems on the Downtown Mall.

City councilors, neighbors, business owners, and police gathered to discuss Downtown issues Tuesday evening. Key concerns were aggressive panhandling, loitering, bad behavior, and worries of crime.

People broke into different groups to work on finding solutions and common ground.

"That's the goal, to come up with a maintenance and an improvement plan that takes us into the future and so that we learn how to work together towards solving the problems...instead of pitching battles, throwing bombs at each other, and finding out who's at fault," said Kathy Galvin, Charlottesville city councilor.

Background information provided came from a North Downtown Residents Association survey.

The work groups will continue to meet. They should report their conclusions to City Council in June.
