Council to Consider Reducing Speed on JPA

April 14, 2013

On Monday, Charlottesville City Council will consider whether to lower the speed on a busy stretch of road.

Right now, drivers can go 35 mph on Jefferson Park Avenue between Cleveland and Fontaine avenues. Monday, council members will hear the first of two readings on an ordinance to consider decreasing the speed limit.

Charlottesville traffic engineering has completed a study looking into the possibility of lowering the speed in the area. The results find that the recommended speed is 30 mph.

Some people who live near JPA say a lower speed would have little impact on drivers.

"When you get down to Fry's Springs, you have to go 25, and when they come up the other way, they're already going 25," said Charlottesville resident David Lea. "So, it's just a little ways to the light, so I wouldn't see it making much difference."

There have been additional requests to lower the speed limit to 25 mph throughout the city. A change in speed limit would affect about a dozen streets.

Monday's council meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in City Hall.
