At its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors endorsed a resolution supporting the temporary closure of Jarmans Gap Road (Route 691).

The Virginia Department of Transportation recommended a complete closure of Jarmans Gap Rd. to traffic for approximately 60 days during the construction project to allow for the installation of a precast box culvert at Powell’s Creek.

The road closure will be coordinated with the summertime public school closing, June through August of 2011. VDOT advises that during the school year, Jarmans Gap Rd. will be reduced to one lane of traffic, as necessary. Complete closure of the road would expedite the installation of the culvert and shorten the overall length of the project.

Officials say adoption of the resolution would not directly impact the County’s budget. VDOT will avoid additional project costs if Jarmans Gap Rd. can be completely closed for the installation of the box culvert.

VDOT has advertised this project for bids and anticipates that results will be available in February.

Jonathan, the planning document reviewed by the supervisors did not specify the exact location of the closure. It said VDOT is replacing the Powell's Creek Culvert. I believe that's the creek about halfway between Crozet Avenue and Old Trail. It seems to me, they could close it off between Crozet Avenue and, I believe, Orchard. Still, it's going to be a mess. And just because they say 60 days, that doesn't mean they can't get it done quicker. And I suppose the long term benefits of a wider, safer road are worth some inconvenience. Easy for me to say...I live on the other side of Crozet. Jim, the Newsplex News Director.

If Jarmans Gap is completely shut down, from where to where will this happen? Crozet Ave to Old Trail??

I love it how people want road improvements up until it directly effects them.
