Creciendo Juntos Workshop: Literacy Development for Spanish-Speaking Preschoolers

April 11, 2013

The Spanish organization Creciendo Juntos (CJ), meaning "Growing Together," held their monthly workshop this morning. It focused on literacy development for Spanish-speaking children in preschool.

Karen Ford PhD. from the Curry School of Education at UVa. spoke to a group of educators and service providers, who help out in the latino community, about why the preschool years are so important in literacy development.

Ford explained that language development is more imporant for children in preschool, than in the early elementary school grades.

The chair of the organization explained why the topic of this workshop is so important.

"The fundamental elements of reading are set before they get to kindergarten, so when parents don't know what to do, that's when the child starts out at a little disadvantage when they enter kindergarten," says Gloria Rockhold, chair of CJ. "So we are hoping, eventually with education, to even out the beginning."

Research has shown that children coming into kindergarten, with developed literacy skills, have a greater advantage in learning to read.
