Dancers Help the Haven With a Ballet Performance

September 15, 2013

A local homeless shelter is getting a helping hand from a few dancers this weekend as they raise funds through their performances.

The show was called "Tripping the Light Fantastic" and performers got a chance to showcase a range of dances from ballet to jazz to a contemporary piece inspired by landscapes in nature.

“Basically, we kind of pull from all forms of movement and bend and break the confines of classical ballet and create our own structure depending on the choreographic needs or inspiration,” says ConcorDance Contemporary director Veronica Hart.

Hart also spoke about the inspiration behind the show's name.

“Essentially the term refers to the mirth and merriment of movement,” says Hart. “It sort of depicts this very free and childlike natural quality in movement.”

There were four performances around Central Virginia over the weekend. The last one was at The Haven, where 10 percent of the ticket proceeds went.

“It's a community space and I love what The Haven does for the community and the homeless people of Central Virginia,” says Hart.

Hart enjoys dancing and wanted to show people of Charlottesville the moves her and several dancers at concordance contemporary have been working on.

"We've really started to notice a very generous audience in terms of their energy and we keep seeing familiar faces come back to shows,” says Hart. “I really like the ability to continue to learn and grow and research.”

She hopes to continue exploring dance and helping to benefit organizations like The Haven.

“Dance is not this art form that you suddenly master, it's a summit-less peak,” says Hart. “So there is always something to be learned, there's always something to be worked on to get better, you can always explore.”
