Del. Toscano Questions Plan to Remove Gas Tax

Del. David Toscano, a Democrat from Charlottesville, says he has concerns about Gov. Bob McDonnell's proposal to remove Virginia's gas tax. McDonnell wants to remove the 17.5 cents per gallon tax at the pump and replace it with a 0.8 percent hike in the sales tax.
"A number of us are very concerned about the transfer of the burden of funding transportation from those who use the roads, including a large number of out-of-state drivers, to the general public," said Toscano, in a statement released Friday night. "This proposal could place further burdens on low income Virginians, many of whom do not even drive."
Toscano says he will carefully consider all of the governor's transportation proposals before deciding whether to support them or not.
Toscano said he was pleased to hear McDonnell express support for automatically restoring civil rights to non-violent felons after they have completed their sentences.
"This is a huge break from the Virginia tradition and will be very controversial," said Toscano. "I have supported 'restoration of rights' for years, and Democrats will likely support the Governor in his proposal."
