A rosy event kicked off the Dogwood Festival Thursday afternoon.

The Dogwood Garden Club's Flower Show marked the official beginning of the Charlottesville Dogwood Festival.

The event took place at the Virginia Department of Forestry.

The event featured floral designs from home grown garden flowers, landscaping exhibits from area businesses, and photography of local gardens and flowers. All announced the beginning of the festival and Spring.

"With all the snow and cold weather we've had, what better lift to the spirit can we have than beautiful flowers and wonderful experiences together and drawing the community in with garden clubs," said Janice Doyle, the Flower Show Chairman for the Dogwood Garden Club.

In addition to showcasing the competing clusters, the Department of Forestry held some free lectures on fire safe landscaping and how to select a Dogwood.
