Dogwood Tree Sale Kicks Off Annual Festival

March 29, 2013

Trees, trees, and more trees were sold at the Barracks Road Shopping Center Friday morning, all of it was in preparation for the annual Dogwood Festival.

"We're here just to celebrate the coming of spring and everything growing and popping out," says Dogwood Festival chair Barry Owens. "That's why we sell the dogwood trees, it's such a beautiful flower and it's also our state tree."

Owens also explained that the trees you buy today may not bloom this year.

In order to make sure you plant your trees correctly, the Virginia Cooperative Extension Piedmont Master Gardeners were out to give people a quick overview of good planting practices.

"The hole needs to be twice as wide as the tree, it doesn't need to be all that much deeper than the root ball itself and you'll have a beautiful healthy tree," says Sarah Bingham, member of the Master Gardeners.

The tree sale is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Dogwood Festival.

Starting price for the trees was $27 dollars. That's a little bit of a jump from last years price of $20 dollars, but all proceeds go to the Dogwood Festival, which begins on April 4th and continues to the 21st.
