Downtown Movie Theater Closing

July 31, 2013

A historic entertainment establishment in Charlottesville is closing its doors.

The Vinegar Hill Theatre will be doing its last showings this weekend.

Theater Manager, James Ford, says they have stayed open as long as they could, but that they just can't compete with the bigger theaters that have come to town.

The theater first opened in 1976, and Ford says a lot of people have made it a part of their personal history.

"I have people stop in every day who haven't been to town in 20 years but they went to college here, and they wanted to stop by Vinegar Hill, and you know, see a place they remember," says Ford. "A lot of people say you know like 'me and my husband went on our first date here,' things like that."

Vinegar Hill Theatre's final showing will be Sunday, August 4.
