As the commonwealth braces for effects from Hurricane Sandy, the local Emergency Communications Center will open at 8 a.m. to create a unified public safety response effort.
Charlottesville, Albemarle County and University of Virginia officials met Sunday to discuss preparations and response strategies. Officials warn that power outages are likely.
To report emergencies, officials urge central Virginians to call 911. The number for non-emergencies is 434-977-9041.
If your power is out, call your power company to report it:
Dominion Virginia Power: 1-866-366-4357
Central Virginia Electric Coop: 1-800-367-2832
Rappahannock Electric Coop: 1-800-552-3904
Appalachian Power: 1-800-956-4237
Local officials urge central Virginians to stay inside during severe weather and to avoid downed power lines or broken glass.
