The Federal Department of Emergency Management (FEMA) announced Friday it has awarded Louisa County $3.25 million to replace earthquake-damaged Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.
This is FEMA's first Public Assistance grant over $1 million to assist the Commonwealth following the August earthquake. TJES was severely damaged during the 5.8 magnitude earthquake on Aug. 23 and subsequent aftershocks.
"FEMA's help following the earthquake has greatly assisted our local school system. The assistance will benefit all our current and future students. Louisa is a 'can do' place, but we will forever appreciate the additional help," said Superintendent Dr. Deborah D. Pettit.
McDonnell reports the funding comes after repair estimates said it could cost more than 50 percent of the estimated replacement cost to restore the school to pre-earthquake condition. The cost to replace the school is $13. 7 million. The anticipated insurance proceeds will be approximately $9.4 million, leaving an estimated balance of approximately $4.3 million, of which 75 percent will be eligible for FEMA coverage.
“One of the most disruptive aspects of this recovery still remaining is the closure of two Louisa schools, forcing students to attend classes in temporary facilities and on adjusted schedules," the governor said in a statement to the media. "This grant to rebuild Thomas Jefferson Elementary School will provide a modern, safe, and more efficient building for the students of this county."
Students, teachers and staff of TJES and Trevilians Elementary have been sharing one building since the earthquake.
