UPDATED: Investigators Identify Victim in Fatal Crash on Route 20

Albemarle County Police say, the victim of the fatal crash on Scottsville Road has been identified.

The Medical Examiner in Richmond identified the victim as 59 year old Gary Meeks from Scottsville.

The Medical Examiner determined the cause of death as blunt force trauma, and that Meeks was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

This is the first fatal crash in Albemarle County in 2013. In 2012, the county saw a total of 12 deadly crashes.

Albemarle County Police say a man has been killed in a crash on Route 20.

The accident happened at about 6:20 p.m. a couple miles south of Charlottesville, near the intersection of Route 20 and Red Hill Road.

Police say the driver of a truck swerved off the road and hit a tree, then the truck caught fire.

The driver died at the scene. Police are still working to identify of the driver. They are sending the body to Richmond for an autopsy.

Police reopened Route 20 at about 10 p.m.

They did accident reconstruction at the scene for several hours.

Police say they are not sure what caused the crash. They were not yet able to determine if speed or alcohol were factors, or if the driver had a medical problem. They are hoping to get those answers from the autopsy.
