Monday was the busiest shipping day of the year, according to FedEx.
The company reports that 19 million packages were being delivered on Monday.
with millions of packages in transit, the fed ex system will be put to the test this month, especially in the next few days.
"The packages come in through the cans," said Beverly Williams, a FedEx manager in Charlottesville. "They're unloaded. Once we're done with the sort, they leave and go out and deliver all day long."
Leslie Taylor, a FedEx delivery person in Charlottesville was out delivering packages on the Downtown Mall.
Another FedEx worker explained why December 10 is always so busy for the company.
"You have the last-minute shoppers," said FedEx manager Cary Presson. "Online sales have generated a lot more revenue."
FedEx reports that e-commerce spending has increased the company's shipping volume 10 percent year to year. Workers say, if you want your gifts to reach their destination before Christmas, don't delay.
"Definitely get it done early," said Presson.
FedEx workers say you have until December 22 if you want your package to arrive by Christmas Eve.
