Federal Grant to Fund Local Preschool Program for Next 5 Years

July 8, 2013

Hundreds of local children will continue to have access to free preschool, thanks to a federal grant.

The Monticello Area Community Action Agency (MACAA) has received funding to continue the Head Start program for at least the next five years.

Executive Director Barbara Miller says the program would have been shut down if they hadn't received the grant.

"Our ability to serve them gives them not just an education, because that's a big part of it but they get nutrition, they get, we make sure that they have their shots and that they're physically healthy," says Miller.

Head Start serves more than 200 children from Charlottesville and surrounding counties.

The governments cut the grant by five-percent, because of the budget sequester, but MACAA officials say they can absorb those cuts without eliminating any classes.
