The Federal Government is telling the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to reassess the need for the Route 29 Western Bypass.
In a letter dated February 18th to VDOT Commissioner Charlie Kilpatrick, an Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) administrator says there is a need to "reassess the purpose and need of the project in light of the changes in the Route 29 corridor that have occurred over the past 20 years to determine if it remains appropriate since the need appears to have expanded well beyond the existing project limits."
The letter urges VDOT to reopen the consideration of alternatives to the Western Bypass project, something that groups critical of the proposed road have been asking for.
"Additionally, we encourage you to work closely with local representatives to gain their support of the transportation improvement moving forward," says FHWA Division Administrator Irene Rico in the letter.
