Fewer Virginians to Travel for Memorial Day Weekend

May 22, 2013

Fewer people are expected to hit the road for the Memorial Day weekend thanks, in part, to government "sequestration" cuts.

AAA projects just over a million Virginians will travel more than 50-miles from home this weekend.

That is down 1.6 percent from 2012.

The decrease is attributed to the negative impact of sequestration and the expiration of the payroll tax cut, which means smaller paychecks for some Americans.

Airfares nationwide are up 10 percent prompting a 10 percent decrease in the number of Virginian’s flying for their holiday celebrations. Just over 67,000 (7% of all holiday travelers) will take to the skies as part of the 2.3 million nationwide.

Median spending per trip is also trending downward this year, expected to decrease more than six percent to $659, compared to $702 in 2012 with transportation costs consuming about 28 cents of every travel dollar.

The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27.
