Saturday is the last day of fire prevention week, so the Albemarle and Seminole Trail Fire Departments demonstrated how quickly a kitchen fire can spread by setting two fake kitchens on fire outside of the Sears at Fashion Square Mall.

One kitchen they extinguished quickly, while the other they let burn, showing how fast and dangerous a kitchen fire can be.

Chief Fire Marshal Howard Lagomarsino says that the point of the demonstration is encourage safety in the kitchen.

"The biggest tip is never walk away from a pan when you start cooking on a stove. If you need to walk away, turn it off," said Lagomarsino. "Other things to think about is the handle -- turn the handle away from the edge of the stove so you don't knock the pot off and burn yourself."
