Firefighters Tackle Fast-moving Charlottesville Blaze

May 19, 2013

Charlottesville firefighters acted quickly Sunday night to stop a fast-moving house fire.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. on the 500 block of Cleveland Avenue. Crews found the fire in the basement spread to the first and second floors.

No one was injured, and the cause is still under investigation.

All crews in the Charlottesville Fire Department responded, in addition to some from Albemarle County. The call was updated to two alarms shortly after it initially came in.

The blaze in the duplex caused smoke damage to the neighboring apartment and the home next door.

"The firefighters responded very rapidly. It was a fast-moving, heavy fire," said Charlottesville Battalion Chief Richard Jones. "They attacked it aggressively, got it under control, which saved both units and the exposure unit on the left side from receiving extensive damage."

The fire department is working with organizations to make sure those affected and displaced by the fire have shelter.

There is still no word on the cost of the damage.
