Firefighter's View Inside a Burning Building

February 22, 2013

The Albemarle County Fire and Rescue has been training new recruits for several weeks, and on Friday, they gave the Newsplex an inside look at what the recruits face while conducting a firefighting simulation.

The simulations are held at a multi-story concrete building with actual flames and actual smoke.

On Friday, one of the recruits attached a small camera to his chest while conducting the training. The camera captured the physical rigors or fighting fires, and the unique way that firefighters communicate while responding to an emergency.

Inside the building, the firefighters are battling the flames in near total darkness.

"It's shell shocking," said recruit Kris Hall. "You go in. You can't see anything. You've got heat on you and it's like wandering around with your eyes closed."

During the drill, firefighters put the fire out in less than eight minutes.

"Training right now is very rigorous," said Hall. "It's a long day of fire in the morning, EMS in the afternoon, and physical training in the afternoon."

"They're learning a lot," said Capt. Matthew Ascoli, with Albemarle Fire and Rescue. "They're excited to see the day go."
