Firework Safety Reminders

July 2, 2013

Independence Day will soon be here, and fireworks will soon fill the skies.

If you're going to light your own fireworks, experts have a few simply reminders for you to help keep you safe.

First, don't point the fireworks at people, trees, or buildings. Also, if a firework doesn't ignite, don't try to light it again.

Small fireworks are legal in most nearby counties, but they are illegal in Charlottesville.

"We had fireworks where bottle rockets went off and flew into the attic of a fraternity house and set the house on fire," say Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner. "We had one house totally destroyed by fireworks one year. So, when you start understanding the implications of what fireworks have and the impact they'll have on the community that's why the City of Charlottesville doesn't allow fireworks."

Fireworks cause nearly 18,000 fires across the country in 2011, and resulted in 9,500 visits to the emergency room.
