First Annual Race Unity Week in Charlottesville

May 13, 2013

Charlottesville's Dialogue on Race kicks off a special week of events.

Today begins the first Race Unity Week, which includes events regarding awareness and the celebration of race and identity here in Charlottesville.

Events allow people to share stories and participate in different discussions all to address how individual race and ethnicity affects our interactions.

Events this week will also include involvement from elementary, middle and high school students.

"We wanted the student participation because the dialogue needs to begin with them," says Charlene Green, program coordinator for the Dialogue on Race. "If anything is going to change in the way we treat each other it starts with the young ones."

There will be discussion and events throughout the week, focusing on engaging people in racial dialogue.

"We've got a whole host of things that we hope are interesting for folks and as a way to sort of say, the Dialogue on Race has been doing lots of things, we're still here, we're going to continue and we hope this brings you to the table for that discussion," said Green.

You can find the list of events for this week at www.charlottesville.org/dialogue.
