Fluvanna County Public Schools joined the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors for a work session Wednesday night to talk about the 2014 school budget.
A baseline budget of $12.2 million dollars has already been put in place, but Fluvanna County superintendent Gena Keller says she hopes they can secure funds closer to about $14 million.
"This would put us in the place where I believe, for the first time in several years, certainly since I've been here, that we'll have good footing for a good year," said Keller.
Keller outlined the nearly $1.2 million in cuts the school board has recently made. A decision to close Cunningham and Columbia elementary schools is expected to save about $650,000 while restructuring positions division wide will recoup another $545,000.
"We've done what we've needed to do to absorb the deficit as we start next year, but we can't stay there. We can't just remain stagnant," Keller said. "We've got to move forward."
Keller shared some of next year's budget priorities that could be addressed in her budget request next month, including eliminating furlough days, investing in technology and restoring funds used for instructional supplies.
Keller will present her proposed budget to the school board on March 6. The school board will adopt a budget the following week, then present it to the board of supervisors March 20.
Supervisors will vote on the budget request in April.
