Update: Former Pastor Found Guilty of Embezzlement

December 20 2012

UPDATE:

Wilbert Brassfield has been found guilty of three counts of embezzlement. He will be fined $7,500, but will serve no jail time.

After nearly two hours of deliberation, the jury came back with the verdict. Brassfield and his attorney declined making a comment but the prosecution said they thank the jury for their dedication and time.

"In terms of the monetary punishment and no jail time, he's a former pastor and worked over 20 years for law enforcement, I think the felony conviction will be a punishment in itself so we understand that," Jeff Haislip, Fluvanna County Commonwealth Attorney, said.

The trial of former pastor Wilbert Brassfield began Thursday in Fluvanna County.

Brassfield is charged with five counts of embezzlement for allegedly taking more than $10,000 from Praise Christian Fellowship's account funds, which he had sole access to.

Prosecutors claim that Brassfield illegally took the money so that he could pay off his home mortgage. Defense attorneys countered that Brassfield was legally entitled to use the money as he saw fit.

The jury in the trial has already begun deliberations.
