A former computer science professor at the University of Virginia wants to be Charlottesville's next treasurer.
John Pfaltz announced he is running against Jason Vandever.
Vandever has been running the treasurer's office since former treasurer Jennifer Brown retired in October. Vandever was Brown's chief deputy.
Pfaltz says he is running because the treasurer's office needs more transparency.
"I want to have a quarterly report made directly to the people," said Pfaltz. "You voted for people. A budget was passed. How is the money being spent on that budget?."
A special election will be held April 2.
