Friend Holds Blood Drive in Memory of Romando Family

April 27, 2013

A close friend of the Romando family turned tragedy into inspiration on Sunday.

The Romando family died in August and were victims of a murder-suicide. But on Sunday, Griffin Yates aimed to help a bigger cause in honor of the three kids and their mother who died.

Yates was a friend of the family and decided to do a blood drive to meet his Eagle Scout requirements.

He worked with the American Red Cross to make it happen at the family's church, the Church of the Incarnation.

"A blood drive, you're helping other people and at the same time it helps them remember the Romando family, so it's kind of doing two things at once," said Yates, an eighth-grader at Charlottesville Catholic School.

More than 50 people donated blood and the some of the blood will be sent up to Boston to help victims of the marathon bombings.
