With the election in November a few months away, gubernatorial candidates have been campaigning and raising money.
For the month of June, Terry McAuliffe (D) raised $1.9 million dollars and Ken Cuccinelli (R) raised $1.1 million.
McCauliffe's campaign also has twice the amount of cash on hand as Cuccinelli, with over $6 million dollars. Cuccinelli has $3 million.
The director of communication for the UVa. Center for Politics spoke about the importance of cash on hand.
"We look at sort of the raw numbers, but the cash on hand at this point is particularly important because it tells us what the candidates actually have to spend going forward," says Kyle Kondik. "McAuliffe has double the amount of money, but Cuccinelli still has a fair amount."
Kondik believes McAuliffe's fundraising background has helped him out so far.
But there are still more funds to raise. Back in 2009, Gov. Bob McDonnell raised $23 million dollars and Senator Creigh Deeds raised $17 million.
