Gillespie Makes Campaign Stop in Albemarle Co.

June 9, 2014

Newly minted Republican candidate for Senate, Ed Gillespie, visited Albemarle County Monday in one of his first stops on the campaign trail.

The former presidential adviser and lobbyist won with the support of the Republican Party at Saturday's convention by acclimation. Gillespie will face Democratic Sen. Mark Warner in the general election in November.

"All the people that were running against him unified behind him, so we have a unified Republican party going into the fall election," said Delegate Rob Bell.

This year's convention was a sharp contrast to last year's filled with intense debate. Gillespie says he hopes the united front by the Republicans will help him defeat Warner.

"I think the opportunity we had coming out of Roanoke to bring together the party, unify us, and bring the makings of a real grassroots army that will spread out across Virginia over the next few months knocking on doors and putting up yard signs," Gillespie said.

On Monday Gillespie visited the GOP headquarters in Albemarle Co., where toted his economic agenda, which includes reforming Obamacare, tapping into Virginia's energy resources, and easing the tax burden.

"Everywhere I go in the Commonwealth I find there is economic anxiety, and in a lot of places economic pain," Gillespie said "All across the Commonwealth people are concerned in the direction this country is heading in; worrying about sky rocketing health insurance premiums, high energy prices, and low wages, lack of availability of jobs."

When it comes to Sen. Warner, who is an early favorite in the race, Gillespie says the senator's record is at odds with what he's promised Virginians.

Senator Warner tweeted congratulating Gillespie, and looking forward to a "spirited debate on issues that matter to Virginians."
