The University of Virginia Medical Center is now opening the doors to a new main lobby. The project took four years to finish and now patients and visitors can enter the main entrance to the hospital.
Hospital officials spoke in front of a crowd of people before cutting the ribbon leading to the new entrance.
The new two-story lobby holds a large information desk as well as a new gift shop. Patients and visitors can get to the lobby through the climate-controlled pedestrian walkway.
"The new lobby while being expanded also allows for more natural light, much easier egress from the facility a convenient patient drop off right in front of the door, while the old lobby had none of those things," says Kevin Fox, administrator for Facilities Planning and Capital Development.
The renovations took four years to complete because the hospital had to remain open throughout construction.
Next the hospital plans to build a new Education Resource Center with space for outpatient radiology, a new pharmacy and space for medical education for those in graduate school.
