Frost warnings are an issue all farmers to deal with this time of year. Many use fans or even helicopters to keep warm, but Trump Winery uses a burning technique. They are constantly watching the temperatures through the vineyard to see when to start the burning process. Jonathan Wheeler is the main grower at the vineyard, and has a couple of nervous days ahead of him.
"When it starts to get 30, 31 degrees, we'll start burning the brown bales and hopefully warm up the air around it and we'll try to get through the frost without any damage."
Most of their grapes are planted on hills so any cold air sinks to lower lying areas, preventing frost. Unfortunately with Virginia’s weather, farmers will always be at the mercy of Mother Nature. There was no reported damage last night, but clear skies tonight will help drop temperatures, and that dew point is rising, which could mean significant frost for the vineyard.
