The Greene County Sheriff’s Office issues a press release on Wednesday, stating that a deputy sheriff has been fired after a Virginia State Police investigation.

Officials say Sgt. Robert L. Beverage, a 24-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, has been terminated and charged with two counts of use of communications systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children.

The investigation is ongoing and the Sheriff's Office say they are cooperating with Virginia State Police.

"It is imperative that the citizens of Greene County know that their sheriff’s office employees are expected to adhere to the laws that we are entrusted to uphold," reads a portion of the press release. "Conduct that undermines that trust will not be tolerated under any circumstances by this administration."

Greene Co. Sheriff Steve Smith says this is an unfortunate event and is disappointed that this happened to one of his deputies.

"It's always hard when you have a brother or sister in law enforcement that gets involved in something like this and it just looks bad for the rest of us, but it's always hard," says Sheriff Smith.

Beverage is currently being held in Rockingham Regional Jail.
