Group Discusses Decrease of African American Students at UVa

April 30, 2013

The group called University And Community Action For Racial Equality trued to tackle why fewer and fewer African American students are enrolled at UVa.

According to the group, the number of black undergrads has declined by 25 percent since 1995.

Monday night, they tried to identify possible reasons for the decrease, such as financial and or community priorities, and possible solutions.

"To hear this discourse, that's been going on in the past couple weeks, that African American acceptance has actually been lower was kind of shocking," said Marthias Wondwosem, a fourth-year student at UVa. "I just wanted to be a part of the community forum to see what caused that and if they're actually solutions that we can be a part of."

In 1990, African Americans accounted for 12 percent of the student body at the University of Virginia. Now, they account for about six and a half percent.
