A new gun range is in the works in Zion Crossroads at Crossroad Gun Shop's new location. The range will be a public access facility, offering by-the-hour lane rentals and annual memberships.
"It's something that's been needed for a very long time," said owner Greg Armstrong.
Armstrong says his shop has been getting a dozen calls per week from people asking where they can go to shoot.
"Most opportunities to shoot in the Charlottesville market are at private clubs," said Armstrong. "You have to join the club, meet their rules and regulations to get in, and it's a little bit of a disincentive to join sometimes."
Armstrong is hoping to give people another option with easier access. He's turning an empty warehouse attached to his gun shop on Industrial Way into a 20-yard, ten-lane range.
"This represents about a $700,000 investment in the economic development of Fluvanna County and central Virginia. It really has to work," said Armstrong.
To get it off the ground, the shop is running a crowdfunding campaign. People can purchase half-price lane rentals and annual memberships now, and lock in the discounted price for good.
"The funds that are raised in that campaign will be used to make sure that when we open on our opening day, it will be a world-class shooting facility. We'll have lots of ammo, plenty of targets, we'll have plenty of staff on hand to help out our customers," said Armstrong.
The shooting range is scheduled to open in March.
