Halloween Industry Scares Up Billions of Dollars

October 30, 2013

Halloween is a booming industry. The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that American's will spend $6.9 billion on Halloween this year.

"It's the only time you get to dress up," said Jake Maine, employee at Spirit Halloween. "You can be someone else for once and have a lot of fun."

"People get out and it's like having a party throughout the evening, said Steve Gaines, a Halloween fan. "Getting candy, dressing up, being somebody you're not and then eating all of the candy."

Spirit Halloween is a seasonal store that aims to provide shoppers with everything they will need for Halloween. The price tag on some items is not cheap.

"For a costume, it all depends," explained Maine. "If you want to buy a lot of accessories for that costume, probably around $50 to over $150."

Anthony Gahan is a college student who said he will spend up to $200 on Halloween this year.

The NRF estimated that upward of $3 billion will be spent on adult and children's costumes. Another $330 million will be spent on pet costumes.

There's also the candy and decorations which puts the average amount spent this Halloween at $75 per person.

"You can do whatever you want to do on Halloween," said Gahan. "You can dress up and have fun. You don't have to be normal. You don't have to be an adult anymore."

Halloween is a day to be whoever or whatever you want. The last trick you'll need to overcome, and maybe the scariest of all, is finding a way to refill your wallet.
