Hazmat Crew Responds to Suspicious Substance on UVa Grounds

Crews have cleared Carruthers Hall, after HazMat crews were able to determine that the powder was not dangerous.

Emergency crews respond to suspicious substance on ground of the University of Virginia.

Firefighters and a hazardous materials team arrived at Carruthers Hall around noon on Thursday.

Officials say a chemical spill had occurred in the mail room of the building.

Responders evacuated the area.

University officials are asking everyone to avoid the area.
