Henley Middle Schoolers Showcase Entrepreneurial Skills

February 12, 2013

Students at Henley Middle School showcased several businesses that were created in the entrepreneurship class.

This is actually the first class of it's kind in their school system that gives eighth graders financial concepts as well as high school credit.

"This class was really advertised as a class where it will help you if you do indeed intend to start a business later in life," says Lauren Meslar, Entrepreneur teacher. " You will learn financial skills the different type of businesses, how to go about that, but also even just for daily life, being able to present, even talking to strangers which the students are getting a lot of practice with today."

Students were graded on business concepts like originality, relevance, feasibility and presentation.

One student even explained her fondue business

"It's called Dips, it's a fondue slash cafe restaurant," says student Cate Roesch. "Our main thing is fondue, but we also sell sandwiches and scones and other cafe products."

The students are showing 17 plans to investors in hopes to get their business off the ground.

The people playing the role of investors are actually local business owners as well as members from around the community, like Wells Fargo Bank, The Darden School of Business and the Board of Supervisors

"Today I am acting as a venture capitalist and we are going around to the different areas that have been set up for us to interview the individuals and their business plan." Explained Board of Supervisor member, Duane Snow

The students take the class to gain some knowledge in the financial field, with hopes to some day become and entrepreneur.
